May 18 - International Museum Day May 18, 2018 | 09:50 / Interesting information

Every year on May 18 is celebrated as the International Museum Day in the world. This year, the International Museum Day is dedicated to the topic of "Museums in Hyperconnected Period: New Approaches, New publics", which emphasizes the role of high technologies in expanding traditional audiences of museums.

The International Museum Day was founded in 1977 on the initiative of the International Council of Museum (ICOM). Today's goal is to show how museums play a vital role in the life of society.

This holiday is widely celebrated in Azerbaijan with ancient history and rich culture.

One of the first museums in Azerbaijan was organized at the Nehram village school of Nakhchivan in the late 19th century with the initiative and close involvement of the prominent writer Jalil Mammadguluzadeh.

At the beginning of the last century, closed museums were established at Baku Pedagogical Institute, as well as the Baku Branch of the All-Russian Technical Society. However, except for the museum in the village of Nehrem, the names mentioned above have been in line with the interests of tsarism. It is no coincidence that valuable archaeological finds found in Azerbaijan were sent to the museums of Tbilisi, Moscow, and St. Petersburg.

The first national museum in Azerbaijan, founded in 1919, in People's Republic period and has been operating since 1920 as the State Museum of Azerbaijan. Exhibits of this museum were valuable works of art from confiscated Baku millionaires such as Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, Murtuza Mukhtarov, Musa Nagiyev in the early years of Soviet rule. The building of the National Azerbaijan History Museum, located in the property of H.Z.Taghiyev, is also valuable as a monument to our history. That's why this place is sometimes referred to as "museum in the museum."

Azerbaijan has always been a state concern for our national values, including museum work. The development of museum work in our country is connected with the name of national leader Heydar Aliyev. The leader of the nation, who deeply and sensitively values the role of museums in the protection of the national history and cultural heritage of our people, has always kept in mind the expansion of the relevant network and strengthening its material and technical base in the republic.

Along with other spheres, the museum's work has entered a new phase of its development after the genius of our leader returned to power. At the initiative of the great leader in 1993, the Cabinet of Ministers held a republican meeting of museum workers, and in 1994, the decision on the status of museum work in the Republic and its improvement was made on the materials of this meeting. The Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On Museums", which came into force on March 24, 2000, regulates the organizational and legal bases of the activity of museums in the country and their respective relations.

The priorities for the development of museum work by the National Leader are being successfully continued by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, led by President Ilham Aliyev and Mehriban Aliyeva, the country's first vice president.

At present, there are more than 200 museums in our country and their expositions promote the ideology of Azerbaijanism successfully.
