April 23 - World Book and Copyright Day Apr 23, 2020 | 13:01 / Interesting information

Today, the world celebrates the 25th anniversary of World Book and Copyright Day. Every year on April 23, various events are held around the world related to this significant day. This day has been celebrated in Azerbaijan since 1997.

World Book and Copyright Day was established on November 15, 1995 at the 28th session of UNESCO in Paris. The resolution emphasized that books are the most important means of dissemination and the most reliable way of storing knowledge, perception and development of cultural traditions, and also noted the special role of authors in the development of society as a whole.

This significant day is held in order to emphasize the great role of books in human life, to determine the place of copyright in the emergence and preservation of cultural heritage, to talk about its importance in sustainable economic development and the formation of the information society, to demonstrate respect and reverence to the creators of intellectual property, as well as to focus on the preservation of cultural heritage and national moral values.

On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, UNESCO Director-General Odre Azoulé addressed the public. The appeal says that many people who are in isolation during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) read books. Books can both entertain and educate. Books also help a person get acquainted with the author of a work, plunge into other worlds and cultures and, at the same time, penetrate deeply into his own world.

Audre Azule noted that, giving the book its due importance, a person can feel the greatness of those types of activities that help to realize themselves - writing, reading, translation and publishing, as well as be inspired by the struggle for those rights and freedoms that make up the whole essence of a full life.

Every year, on the occasion of this significant date, a big celebration is organized at UNESCO headquarters. Book dealers, representatives of publishing houses and artists who share their love of books and reading with young people through workshops (typography, illustration, book binding, etc.) are invited to the celebration.
