On May 24, at the next meeting of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Academician-Secretary of the Department of Humanitarian Sciences of ANAS, Academician Teymur Kerimli delivered a report "How well do we know the modern Azerbaijani language? Statement and ways to solve the problem."

The academician noted that throughout history, Azerbaijan, occupying an important geopolitical position and located at the intersection of various cultures and languages, was known as a multicultural and multilingual country. Having said that the process of mutual influence and mutual enrichment of languages is becoming more pronounced in the globalizing world, the academician-secretary of the department added that some ancient and modern languages disappeared under the influence of various factors, natural and geographical, economic and political conditions.

The speaker emphasized that in the period of independence the preservation of the purity of the Azerbaijani language has always been given special attention: "The great leader Heydar Aliyev was concerned with preserving the state language as a priority area for the construction of an independent state, he paid special attention in his deeply meaningful statements about our language to ensuring cleanliness literary Azerbaijani language. Surely continuing the language policy of the national leader, President Ilham Aliyev carried out activities to improve the teaching and learning of the Azerbaijani language, expand its use and ensure its preservation. "

Noting that in the modern period the most influential sources that influence the language are the mass media, the academician spoke about the activities implemented in this area in recent years at the state level: "Language policy is controlled at the state level, the National Television and Radio Council carries out various activities in this field. Scientists and specialists of ANAS take an active part in these events. There is still a lot of work ahead, most of which lies on the shoulders of the Academy, the Department of the Humanities, and Institute of Linguistics."

Having said that each language consists of phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic levels, Academician Teymur Kerimli detailed about the violations encountered in this field stressed the need to develop a certain mechanism for eliminating problems. In conclusion of his report, the Academician-Secretary voiced proposals aimed at preserving the purity of our language, the development of the theory and practice of linguistics in the country.

After listening to the report, discussions were held, questions were responded. The Presidium adopted a resolution on holding a contest among undergraduates and doctoral candidates of ANAS under the title "How well we know our native language". The department was also advised on issues such as applying to higher authorities to develop a mechanism for collecting fines on the basis of data from the Monitoring Department of the Institute of Linguistics related to the elimination of language violations on street advertisements, announcements and posters, consulting with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the problem Teaching the discipline "Rhetoric" in secondary and higher schools, etc. The resolution reflected the instructions to improve publish a large circulation and distribution of the "Orphoepic Dictionary of the Azerbaijani Language", prepare a revised edition of the monograph "Culture of Speech", etc.
