Every year, May 3 is celebrated as the International Day of Journalists in the world - World Press Freedom Day. The main principles of freedom of speech and press, the independence of the press, the role of the press in protecting human rights and freedoms, and other issues are discussed at the events held in this respect.

In 2019, UNESCO celebrates the World Press Freedom Day for the 26th time. The event will be held in Ethiopia on May 1-3, organized by the organization jointly with the African Union Commission and the Government of Ethiopia.

Celebrated events are dedicated to a theme every year. 2019 is dedicated to the theme of "Mass Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Disinformation." The events will focus on the challenges facing the media during the electoral period, as well as the media's potential for peace and reconciliation.
