Today is the International Day of Azerbaijani Mugham and Music Day of the countries situated on the Silk Road.
The decision on this was adopted by the Niagara City Hall, Canada and leadership of annual International Niagara Music Festival in 2010.
This is fact that, Mugham is not only the national wealth of the Azerbaijani people, but also a common heritage.
The many-branched chain of measures taken under the leadership of President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva play an exceptional role. Thanks to the efforts of the first lady of the country by the decision of UNESCO Mugham was included into the row heaving human significance of the world culture’s immaterial heritage.
The curriculum of the first European music educational institution included the teaching of Mugham was opened in 1922, in Baku.
Mugham is still a source of inspiration for our artists, sculptors, poets and directors. It is one of the most valuable monuments of the material and spiritual culture of Azerbaijan and the greatest achievement of the musical and poetic art of the Azerbaijani people.
The noble Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov created the Mugham opera "Leyli and Majnun", based on a synthesis of Mugham and European classical music, hereby making the art of Mugham world-known.
The symphonic Mughams by Fikrat Amirov "Shur" and "Kurd-Ovshar" laid the foundation for the genre of "symphonic Mugham". The principles of mugam in the works by Niyazi, Gara Garaev, Soltan Hajibeyov, Jovdat Hajiyev, Aghshin Alizade, Arif Malikov and Firangiz Alizade are presented in modern technology.
The International Mugham center has been built in Azerbaijan, which has become the venue for the most prestigious events. The Mugham contests are organized by the initiative and support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation to identify young mugam performers.
