Baku State University held a farewell ceremony in honour of outstanding orientalist, active member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist, head of the Department of Arab Philology, personal pensioner of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Philology, Professor Vasim Mammadaliev on October 14.

The farewell ceremony was attended by representatives of the state and government, scientists and cultural figures, intellectuals, public figures and family members of the late scientist.

Wreaths were laid at the coffin of the late scientist on behalf of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, government agencies and various collectives.

Colleagues, friends, acquaintances of academician Vasim Mammadaliev, famous scientists and cultural figures came to the building of the BSU and gave their last debt to an outstanding scientist.

Speaking at the farewell ceremony, BSU Rector, PhD in Physics Elchin Babayev said that, today is a very difficult day for the Azerbaijani scientific, educational and intellectual community: “We say goodbye to Vasim Mammadaliev, whom everyone knows, respects and loves. The great scientist who devoted his life to the spiritual enrichment of our people was one of the initiators of the development of the scientific study of Islam in Azerbaijan”.

Then, dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Professor Elkhan Azizov, director of the Ataturk Center in Azerbaijan, academician Nizami Jafarov, academician-secretary of ANAS Division of Humanitarian Sciences, academician Teymur Karimli and others spoke at the farewell ceremony.

In their speeches, they noted that, Vasim Mammadaliev the ideal figure of the Azerbaijani intelligentsia and was distinguished by his activity in participating in the country's social and political life and in the scientific and pedagogical environment.

Speaking about the simplicity and human qualities of an outstanding scientist, the speakers noted that, his bright memory will always live in us.

The scientist was buried in the second Alley of Honor.
