February 21 - International Mother Language Day Feb 21, 2020 | 10:50 / Interesting information

In 1999, at the initiative of the Government of Bangladesh, UNESCO declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day. On this day, those who gave their lives in order for the Bengali language to be recognized in Bangladesh as the official language are remembered.

International Mother Language Day is celebrated with the goal of protecting linguistic and cultural diversity. On this day in 1952, young people, mostly students, rebelled against declaring the Urdu language as the only national language of East Pakistan (Bangladesh). Police crushed the rebellion, several dozen students were killed. This protest rally was the first omen of freedom for Bangladesh. This day in Bangladesh is also called the Day of Remembrance of the Heroes.

In our country, the Azerbaijani language was declared the state language at the initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev. On September 30, 2002, the Law "On the state language of the Republic of Azerbaijan" was adopted.

Now this policy is successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev. The order "On the implementation of mass media in the Azerbaijani language with Latin graphics" dated January 12, 2004 and other measures taken in this direction are a manifestation of concern for the development of the Azerbaijani language.
