Every year on May 18 is widely celebrated as International Museum Day around the world.

International Museum Day was established in 1977 on the initiative of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Museum Day is arranged in order to demonstrate to society the role of museums in the development of society.

For 2016 this topic was the slogan "Museums and cultural landscapes."

This holiday is widely celebrated in Azerbaijan, which has an ancient history and rich culture.

On the International Day of Museums entrance of citizens and foreigners temporarily are residing in the country to the National Museum of Azerbaijani Literature after Nizami free of charge.

The action is directed to support of a role of the museums in acquaintance of citizens with national cultural heritage of Azerbaijan and in cultural education of society.
