At today's meeting of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the issue on establishing of the Scientific Center for the Study of the Silk Road Cultural Heritage under ANAS Presidium was considered. In his speech on this issue, ANAS vice-president, academician Isa Habibbayli said that, in recent years the position of independent Azerbaijan in the world has been strengthened even more, the country's ties with authoritative international organizations and states are expanding and one of the most important initiatives that the republic supports internationally level is the restoration project of the historic Silk Road.
Having said that a significant impetus to this historical process was given by the resolutions of the international conference “TRACECA - Restoring the Historical Silk Road”, which was initiated by the national leader Heydar Aliyev and supported by the European Commission in Baku in September 1998, academician also noted that important infrastructure projects implemented in the country, including the signing during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to China in December 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries to jointly support the creation of the Silk Road Economic Belt, participation the head of state at the International Forum of Cooperation, which took place in April this year in Beijing, all these events are indicators that Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to the Silk Road reconstruction project.
Academician Isa Habibbayli said that, our country is also interested in developing the historical, cultural and humanitarian directions of the Silk Road project and is closely cooperating in this area with various international organizations, especially UNESCO. He noted that, based on the new realities and appeals that are currently being formed at the international level in connection with the Silk Road restoration project, as well as taking into account the priority that is given at the state level to activities in this area, there was a need for targeted coordination relevant research and new integrated research.
Considering all the above, a decision was made to create a Scientific Center for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of the Silk Road under the Presidium of ANAS. Academician Shahin Mustafayev was appointed as Director of the center. The main scientific priorities in the center's activities were identified such issues as the study of the history and cultural heritage of the Silk Road, the study of international trade relations of Azerbaijan along the historical Silk Road and the impact of these relations on the political, economic and cultural development of the country, the study of tangible and intangible cultural monuments of Azerbaijan, associated with the Silk Road, the implementation of the necessary expert activities to preserve and promote this heritage, study, translation publication of important historical and cultural written sources discovered along the Silk Road, studying and forecasting the opportunities and appeals that the new Silk Road creates in the field of Azerbaijan’s integration into the world economic and trade system, implementation of interdisciplinary research projects with various ANAS institutes and other organizations applied nature, aimed at the study and promotion of the Silk Road.
In addition, the resolution reflected such issues as the creation of the Center Advisory Board, preparation of the Regulation on the center and its submission to the Presidium of ANAS, etc.
