A video conference was held at the Nizami Ganjavi National Museum of Azerbaijani Literature of ANAS on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the famous sculptor, People’s Artist Akif Asgarov.

Opening the event, museum director academician Rafael Huseynov said that the day of the conference - May 14 - is a significant date for the museum. He noted that 75 years ago, in 1945, the museum first opened its doors to visitors. The scientist noted that the purpose of the 80th anniversary of Akif Asgerov on this day was to decorate the exhibition halls of the museum, which also turns 80 this year, with works of art from an 80-year-old sculptor.

Analyzing the work of Akif Asgarov, Rafael Huseynov noted that his name is mentioned along with such master sculptors as Fuad Abdurrahmanov, Jalal Garyagdi, Tokay Mammadov, Omar Eldarov.

“The work of Akif Asgarov gained fame not only in Azerbaijan but also in Germany, France, Slovenia, Turkey and other countries,” the museum director said, noting that his statue of Huseyn Javid has a special place in the permanent exhibition in the Tretyakov Gallery.

Then, the museum employees connected to the video conference from the halls, where the works of Akif Asgarov are presented, and presented to the participants the works of art that are the product of the sculptor. They informed about the statues of Huseyn Javid and Mammad Said Ordubadi, the figure of "H. Natavan and Alexander Dumas", the tombstone of A. Topchubashov, the statue of academician Yusif Mammadaliev and others.

Together with museum staff, a close friend and colleague of the hero of the day, Secretary of the Union of Azerbaijan Artists, Vice-Rector of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Arts, People’s Artist, member of the Museum’s Academic Council Salhab Mammadov spoke about the friendship with the sculptor and congratulated him on behalf of the organization he represents.

Speaking later, People's Artist Akif Asgarov thanked academician Rafael Huseynov for organizing the conference, as well as museum staff and video conference participants.

Expressing gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva for caring for cultural figures, the hero of the day noted that the 2nd-Class Order of Emek, which he recently awarded, is a clear example of the state’s high attention to art and artists. He said that he would continue to make new contributions to domestic sculpture.

Finally, academician Rafael Huseynov said that the age of the artist is not calculated by the date of his birth, but by the date when he began to engage in art. Akif Asgarov will continue to please our people and enrich the Azerbaijani culture with his new works for many years to come.

It should be noted that employees of the Aran Branch after Khagani Shirvani Museum, Karabakh Branch after Khurshidbanu Natavan, Center for Russian-Azerbaijani Literary Relations named after Sergei Yesenin also joined the video conference and congratulated the prominent artist on his anniversary.
