Every year on May 18 in the countries of the world the International Museum Day is celebrated.

This holiday, established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to promote the development of cultural exchange and cooperation between peoples, is held every year under different mottos. This year, the motto of International Museum Day is “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion”.

This significant day is widely celebrated in our country.

The development of museum business in Azerbaijan is connected with the name of the national leader Heydar Aliyev. Noting the role of museums in safeguarding the historical and cultural heritage of our people, the great leader always focused on expanding the museum network in the republic and strengthening its material and technical base. It was precisely on the personal initiative of the national leader Heydar Aliyev that the house-museums and memorial museums of the brilliant representatives of Azerbaijani culture — Samad Vurgun, Uzeyir Hajibeyli, Jalil Mammadguluzadeh, Jafar Jabbarli, Huseyn Javid, Mammad Said Ordubadi, Bulbul, Niyazi and others, were created also local history museums in the regions.

The priorities set by the great leader Heydar Aliyev in the development of museum business are being successfully implemented by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation under the leadership of the First Lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva.

Currently, there are more than 200 museums in the country, the expositions of which successfully promote the ideology of Azerbaijanism. A number of museums also operate under the authority of ANAS, the largest of which are the Nizami Ganjavi National Museum of Azerbaijani Literature, the National Museum of the History of Azerbaijan and the Huseyn Javid House Museum. These museums also annually celebrate International Museum Day with various events, exhibitions, scientific seminars, etc.

The National Museum of Azerbaijani Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi of ANAS carries out versatile activities aimed at collecting, researching and storing materials on Azerbaijani literature and culture in scientific funds, as well as their demonstration at the exposition and at exhibitions. The museum has been working to create a scientific exposition of literary and cultural thought in Azerbaijan from ancient times to this day, based on a thorough study of the history of national literature.

The National Museum of Azerbaijan History of ANAS carries out work on the collection, storage, scientific research, propaganda and demonstration of materials on the history, material and spiritual culture of Azerbaijan from the ancient period to the present day. The museum also operates in areas such as the creation and continuous improvement of a new stationary exhibition reflecting the life and work of the great philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev, the constant enrichment of funds with new exhibits, the restoration and certification of stock materials, etc.

Created in 1995, Huseyn Javid House Museum of ANAS is located in the apartment where the poet lived from 1920 to July 4, 1937 and created most of his works. The museum collects, stores, studies and promotes materials related to Huseyn Javid and the legacy of the Javid family.
