Deputy chairman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, director of the National Museum of Azerbaijan Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi, academician Rafael Huseynov made a speech at the high-level opening on multilevel and multi-vector climate activities organized within the framework of the 29th Session of the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

İn the speech the academician said that the attention of the world is focused on Azerbaijan, and stressed that hosting COP29 in Baku is an indicator of the country's growing prestige.

The scientist also said that cities are currently on the front line of the climate crisis. They are the main contributors to global emissions and the first to feel the effects of climate change. "At COP29, we see the growing importance of multilevel and multidisciplinary cooperation. To expand urban climate action, we need to unite all levels of government and align our policies across sectors” he added

Rafael Huseynov also mentioned that “MAP declaration presented at COP29 will guide us in this collective effort for resilent and healthy cities. We highly appreciate the   COP-29 Presidency’s creative initiative to bring a parliamentarian angle into the MAP (Multisectoral Actions Pathways) for Climate Resilient and Healthy cities.

In conclusion he mentioned the words of a prominent representative of world literature, great Azerbaijani poet and thinker Nizami Ganjavi, who back in XII century promoted the key issues of climate change discussions in following slogan: “On earth, in society, between people and nature should reign harmony and consent, otherwise humanity will destroy itself.”

Speaker also said that Ganja, native city of Nizami actively implements green city policies, participates in the EBRD Green City Program, cooperates with UNIDO e Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RESP) program, and works with UNECE on strategic environmental performance for its new masterplan draft. He stressed that today, the homeland of Nizami Ganjavi makes an important contribution to solving climate change problems by hosting COP29, as well as shaping the global and regional heritage of the event: “Let's further strengthen our cooperation to increase urban climate ambitions and implement climate activities. Only together we can follow Nizami's wise words and save our planet.”
